We gather around a bonfire in the campground at Ferry Beach with friends we know and friends we just haven’t met yet and share stories of our last year. We often make ourselves aware of the earth’s directions and their meaning.
Many times, we also share a song or two! Then we honor the earth’s trip around the sun with a releasing of challenges we may have experienced throughout the year. We often do this by writing these down on a piece of paper and releasing them into the fire. Then we will share what we hope to bring in this year as the earth makes its journey around the sun. These may be at the personal, community or national level. This year, we are going to do a special calling in of peace and justice around the world, that we as humans wake up to the shared connection with each other and with all of the inhabitants of the planet, including the earth herself. The winter and summer solstice events occur when one of Earth's poles are tilted toward the sun at its most extreme angle, and due to the Earth's tilt, this happens twice a year. In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice falls in June and the winter solstice falls in December. The summer solstice which is the longest day of the year is celebrated by many cultures around the world with numerous traditions, and festivals. At Ferry Beach, we have been honoring the two solstice events each year with a bonfire and a ritual celebration that connects us to how our long-ago ancestors may have honored the day. We'd love to have you join us! |
