Workshops
Cycling with Michael Scott
Michael will be leading a group of cyclists as we explore the sights near Ferry Beach. Possible destinations include Ferry Beach State Park, Old Orchard, the Eastern Trail, Scarborough Marsh, Pine Point, Prout's Neck, and (with a modest initial car ride) Biddeford Pool, Crescent Beach, Cape Elizabeth, and the Portland Head Light. The group can consider embarking on a full-day excursion to Peaks Island, accessible by ferry from downtown Portland. Michael is happy to share his knowledge of the art of bicycle maintenance with those who are interested.
Participants will need to bring (or find a place to rent) their own bicycle and will need to be comfortable riding 10-15 miles at a time. Helmets are required. Medium-to-wide tires are preferred: narrow road tires will limit our access to some lovely gravel paths.

Michael Scott is a third-generation Ferry Beacher and lifelong cyclist. As he nears retirement he's slowing down a bit, but still loves the sense of freedom he feels on two wheels. He and Elaine Pratt offered this workshop in 2010 and 2011, following up on Elaine's solo offering in 2009. In his day job, Michael chairs the Department of Computer Science at the University of Rochester and is active in Rochester's First Universalist Church. He and his wife, Kelly, have two daughters who are also avid Ferry Beachers: Shannon is studying to become a zookeeper; Erin is studying for the UU ministry.

Punch Needle Rug Hooking with Kelly Scott
Are you:
- enticed by exploring with color, design, patterns?
- drawn to the tactile satisfaction of fiber arts projects?
- up for having FUN?
Then join the Punch Needle Rug Hooking group, a gender-inclusive creative workshop open to those of self-perceived artistic abilities both great and small.
This will be a Beginnings workshop that, later in the week, will be opened up to those with more experience looking for a refresher or further exploration.
In the Beginnings class, you will make an 12” ‘coaster’ or wall hanging, and in so doing, will learn all (yes, all) the skills necessary for making larger rugs. Choose from several patterns offered or draw your own. The #14 and/or #10 Oxford Punch Needles will be used, along with a palette of beautiful and interesting acrylic yarns.
The only things you really *need* are a note pad, pen, & small scissors.
If you have the following, then feel free to bring:
- small lap frame
- size #14 & #10 Oxford punch needle
- worsted weight yarn (wool, if one has it, is just fine)
- bent handled or curved-tip scissors (regular scissors work, too)
- a simple design you already has in mind

JP's Jazz Jam with John "JP" Pearson
JP'S JAZZ JAM will again be offered as a fully scheduled and official workshop! Participants will enjoy creating community as they share their INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL musical skills.
As usual, all levels of musical ability are welcome as long as you come with your own instrument (even those you may not think of as traditional "Jazz" instruments - we'll make it work and make you happy!). Make certain to pack a desire to explore, expand, and create new abilities among supportive friends.
We expect our afternoon "scheduled" meeting time to again provide a better opportunity to address and nurture individual needs and preferences along with providing more time for small group and ensemble projects. In addition to greater active participation, we will also be able to spend some meaningful moments listening to recordings of Jazz masters as examples and inspiration for developing styles and ideas for improvisation and performance.
Several participants have discovered and highly recommend that bringing a personal recording device (cell phone/tablet/??) and a music manuscript notebook very helpful for individual practice purposes outside of our sessions. You might want to bring a folding music stand and any sheet music you might like to work with.
As in the past we will be developing a total group performance piece for Thursday's "INTER-GENERATIONAL TNT SHOW". We are all so very much looking forward to seeing and playing with as many new and old Family & Friends musicians from years gone by!

Song Writing with Nick Bloom
The songwriting workshop returns! During this time we learn some of the classic forms and genres of (mostly American) popular music, and we listen to songs that embody these forms, discussing and breaking them down together. Doing so we demystify the songwriting process, and we gain some useful tools for writing our own songs. We then spend the majority of our time writing songs, collaborating on songs together, and sharing our songs with one another.
This workshop is for songwriters of all abilities. Whether you are a veteran singer-songwriter, a professional musician, or you have never written a song and do not have any musical background, you are welcome. If you play a musical instrument, you are highly encouraged to bring it with you to accompany yourself and to collaborate with others. However, an instrument is not necessary to participate in the workshop.

Nick Bloom is a songwriter, singer, strummer, and lover of many forms of song. He has written and performed his own music for more than a decade in many parts of the country, though his favorite place to write and perform has always been the Rose Pavilion at Ferry Beach. Nick has released two albums of his own music with his New York City-based band, Bold Forbes, and regularly performs country-folk music in his current home city, Austin, Texas. Nick cannot wait to once again lead this songwriting workshop at Family & Friends, one of the most creatively fertile, soulful places on earth.

Writing with Sharon O'Brien
Have you ever thought that you’d like to write your own life story, or invent one you give to a fictional character? Have you ever wanted to share writing with a supportive group and receive ideas and insights? “Everyone has a story that only he or she can tell,” writer Susan Monsky once said. In this writing workshop you will discover, explore, and shape a story (or stories). You will learn how to make your stories reach readers by drawing on the material of life and transforming it into a shaped narrative. Whether you are working in creative nonfiction, memoir, fiction or poetry you will find the workshop a place to explore your creativity. Because this is a workshop, the instructor will guide the class by giving writing prompts, although everyone is also free to develop their own. Writers will be encouraged to read their work aloud and will receive useful feedback and encouragement from the other writers. Everyone will have at least one individual appointment with the instructor, and there will be the opportunity to participate in a reading. No writing experience is necessary.
Sharon O’Brien is a teacher, writer, and reader who has taught creative writing at Dickinson College for more than 20 years. She began her own writing life as a biographer of the American novelist Willa Cather, and soon realized that biography is a form of story-telling. She took creative writing classes at Harvard Summer School and later taught creative nonfiction there. In 2004 she published her own memoir (U Chicago Press), The Family Silver, where she explored the ways in which history and culture can shape people’s lives. In addition to teaching memoir and personal essay to undergraduates, she teaches writing workshops and courses in the community. She fell in love with Ferry Beach the first time she came here, and is honored to be part of the long, vibrant tradition of writing workshop leaders in this community. She believes that writing carries spiritual and emotional weight and has the power to create empathy.

Yoga with Megan Cullinane
Our morning gatherings will include a flexible schedule of yin yoga, power vinyasa, restorative yoga, meditation, inquiry, and reflection. In yin practice we will focus on the connective tissue in the body and flow slowly, holding each pose for 3-5 minutes. Power flows will move through many poses at a faster pace. Participants should bring a journal, mat, blanket, and pillows of all varieties.
Megan (she/they) loves leading yoga on zoom and in various other places in real life! They fell into the community at Grace and Glory Yoga where they completed hundreds of hours of transformative practice, a Yin Yoga 60 Hour Certification program, and a 200 Hour Teacher Leader Development Program. Megan went on to further their knowledge at a Level One Aerial Yoga Teacher Certification with Vata Asana. She believes inclusion is the heart of yoga.
