Every Day Intimacy
Happy or sad, I need to talk. Not someone to "listen so they can tell me what to fix." But someone to listen so I get what's INSIDE of me out: heard & understood. If you’re already that kind of listener, give me your number! If you'd like to get even better, join me in this workshop. We'll explore & practice the simple but effective O.A.R.S. way of listening (Open Questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summaries). By the time we end, you and your partner will have heard one another and you will feel it. Perry Carrison is an executive coach, spiritual director and Gayla enthusiast since 2000. Like many Gayla brothers, he was mangled by culture and sexual abuse, then made his life about healing and supporting others who want their own peace of mind. He learned about "the Able Community" at Gayla and now passes on that helpful wisdom. Thanks to the help of a Gayla brother then made his way from the South to Boston in 2003. Frolicking with the Fairies
This workshop invokes the playful and quirky Faeries of folklore and mythology. These magickal earth spirits will help us access non-ordinary reality so we can identify ways to live fulfilling and meaningful lives. We’ll begin by creating sacred space and then make our way into the woodlands to where the fairies gather. We’ll then journey to three realms – the upper, middle, and lower worlds – to ask for information that alludes us in how we play, work, and love. We’ll conclude with a fairy forest party to offer up our transformational intentions and celebrate summer. Jay Thomas is a health coach, workshop leader, and eclectic shamanic practitioner. For over 30 years, he has used ancient and modern techniques for problem-solving, self-discovery, personal growth, and healing. Jay facilitates workshops and retreats throughout New England about honing shamanic Power and fostering Nature connections. Gay Men in the Time of a Global Pandemic
How do we achieve personal fulfillment as gay men living during a global pandemic? Three GAYLA brothers will share their vision for thriving in and through the pandemic. Participants will identify what they experience as the greatest challenges facing our community and them personally: issues like medical care, financial decisions, downsizing, estate issues, medical power of attorney for health care or other concerns. Notes from the session will be included in a future GAYLA newsletter, and may be explored next year when we hope to be at Ferry Beach. Led by GAYLA brothers Bill Mitchell, Tom Konkoly, Richard Barrett (leader on personal development), David Prok (professor of Sociology) and Julio Aponte (MD). No Need to be Afraid
The mission of this workshop is to break down the barriers of communication between those who are “normal” and those who are “different.” Advancing new friendships can lead to the easing of unnecessary tensions, as well as the enrichment of our lives. Explore the embrace of differences and similarities, as well as increasing the ability to be honest without fear of the PC police. Joe DeBenedictis I am Joe, a 60-year-old man who is blind, gay, and a happy GAYLA brother for the past three years. I currently live in Ohio with my dear partner, Dave, as I have for nearly 13 years. I enjoy music, reading, socializing and, of course, food - can’t live without that, LOL Soulful Touch and Heart Centered Movement
In this time of social distancing, we are sitting in front of our computers way too much and not getting the nurturing touch and movement that we need. In this workshop, we will explore connection through movement and touch through a variety of practices that support embodiment, opening the heart, and awakening our bodies and souls. If you have one, bring a light airy scarf as a movement prop. This is the 3rd collaboration between Ron and Arnie. Ron McClelland is a life-long dancer of numerous styles of movement from ballroom to tap. He studied with Dan Leven at Kripalu Yoga Center in Lenox, MA and is a certified SHAKE YOUR SOUL teacher for several years. He lives in Jamaica Plain with his husband Stephen. He believes everyone has a natural dancer within them just waiting for an invitation to come out and play. Arnie Katz is a Boston-based massage therapist, bodyworker, professional coach, and workshop facilitator. He has been dedicated to serving the health and well-being of people through professional caring touch and facilitation for over 30 years. Teaching is his calling and his passion! He thrives on in the moment inspiration, creativity, and spontaneity to create the best program possible. He can be reached at [email protected] Workshop Session B Descriptions
Writing form the Heart
Storytelling is one of the most ancient and universal ways of communicating values, beliefs and experiences, for current and future generations. In this track, we, as gay, bi and trans men will explore our memories, emotions and experiences by writing our stories. By writing and sharing our stories, you will come away with an increased understanding of how to integrate your stories into your life and utilize them in beneficial ways for yourself and for others. Michael Dubson is a professor of Writing and Literature at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston. He holds a Master's Degree in Composition Theory from UMass Boston and a Graduate Certificate in Publishing from Emerson College. Mike has published two books, been the editor of two Literary Magazines and has had many articles, essays, stories and poems published in various publications. Michael's Meatballs & Sunday Gravy
In this workshop we will make 12-16 luscious meatballs and enough tasty gravy to serve with your favorite pasta for 4-6 people. Your friends will love you even more after they taste your culinary creation. Ingredients to purchase in advance: Meatballs
Sunday Gravy
Michael DeNapoli is an amateur who loves to cook. He learned from his mother who was a great cook who loved to try new things. Everything she made tasted great! Michael attended GAYLA in 2017 and is looking forward to seeing you in the kitchen in July! The Night Larry Kramer Kissed All Of Us
This session is a memorial tribute to Larry Kramer—novelist, playwright, and total badass activist. We will discuss his contributions and watch video clips from his plays, see him in action as an activist, and look at some excerpts from his novel. Joe Law has been attending GAYLA since 2012 and has presented workshop tracks at several earlier conferences. Until his retirement in 2014, he was a member of the administration at Wright State University (Dayton, OH) and Professor of English there. Sharing Power Needs a Plan
When it comes to collaboration and decision-making, many people think, just "declaring" that we're all equals will make it so. But best intentions are not enough, we need to have a plan to collaborate intentionally and make decisions effectively and with many voices heard and considered. This workshop will show some out-of-the-box tools from sociocracy with tweaks that could benefit organizations like GAYLA. There will be an opportunity to try out a process in small groups, and to connect with other exploring our experiences in collaborative governance. Ted Rau, a transgender man, lives in an intentional community in Massachusetts with his partner and 5 kids. He teaches facilitation and shared power in organizations and is author of the book "Many Voices One Song. Shared power with sociocracy." Ted is new to GAYLA. How to Have Sex in a Pandemic In 1983, a manual written by Richard Berkowitz, Michael Callen, and Dr. Joseph Sonnabend produced How to Have Sex in an Epidemic: One Approach. The guide provided much needed advise for men who love and have sex with men on how to do so more safely during the early days of the AIDS pandemic. Along with others such as the Play Fair! brochure produced by San Fransisco's Chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, it formed the foundation for what we know as safer sex. These guides mixed humor, frank talk, and evidence based information to help us create a sexual praxis by which we could understand and engage with sex, pleasure, love, and intimacy during HIV/AIDS. In this workshop we will examine ourselves, our past, the evidence, and the externalities we are currently facing in order to create a praxis by which to find a way to survive today’s pandemic. These examinations will help create a short zine created in partnership with Frannie Peabody Center and GAYLA that will be published online for others to adapt and use. Ren Morrill is joining GAYLA for the 3rd year. Ren does HIV prevention at the Frannie Peabody Center, an AIDS service non-profit located in Portland, Maine. Ren has a lifelong passion for safer sex, harm reduction and the magic of sexuality that began with reading Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" in high school. Ren is a radical fairy, a leatherman, and a philosopher slut to the people. Ren welcomes any and all of your questions! |
