Young dancers and musicians from the Transylvanian region of Romania will visit Southern Maine as a stop on their tour of Northern New England.
The dancers and musicians are members of two performance groups, the Vadrózsák Néptánccsoport (Wild Roses folk dance group) and the Lelkes Zenekar (Enthusiastic Band). They are ethnic Hungarians, who live in a region of Transylvania with a vast majority concentration of Hungarians. They are a proud ethnic minority with a long history of cultural and religious oppression. The groups were founded by two teachers at the Unitarian School in Székelykeresztúr, Romania who are passionate about keeping their ethnic Hungarian folk traditions of dance, music, dress and food alive to maintain their identities and heritage. The day will be filled with workshops, food, music, dance and cultural activities. Capping off the day’s activities will be a full performance scheduled for 7:30pm followed by a community dance for the performers, their traveling companions and the audience. Participants will be instructed in dances from Transylvania, Eastern Europe, France, England, Canada and the United States. This promises to truly be a one-of-a-kind event! |
