Wind up your summer at Ferry Beach by exploring your inner artist. This year we’re trying a new format: intensive art classes for adults only while the kids are in a separate art/activities program of their own. The classes will take place in the morning, between 9:00 a.m. and noon. After lunch, you get to play, explore and reconnect with your family, or continue to work on your art independently. In addition, each instructor will take one afternoon to hold an intensive workshop for those who would like to try dabbling in another type of art. Please sign up for one program for the whole week. Don’t worry—you will have the opportunity to try other things throughout the week if you just can’t make up your mind. Photography: Award-winning photographers Harriet Sutherland and Dick Welch will be back for their 10th year with their popular workshop. Emphasis will be on improving your photography through creative techniques, composition, and technical knowledge. There will be field trips to local scenic areas. Participants will share their work and engage in friendly critiques. The class wraps up with a slide show of class members’ best work. Weaving: Boston-based weaver Susan Gilday will be teaching “weaving for rank beginners.” The course will cover the basics--winding a warp, threading a loom, and completing at least one wearable project. Participants will work on their own loom, and will have the opportunity to try different types of weaving on other looms that will be available. We’ll start the week with a yarn buying trip to Halcyon in Bath, Maine. Polymer Clay: A long time weaver and weaving teacher at Ferry Beach, Connie Gary has recently developed a passion for polymer clay. She has attended numerous polymer clay retreats and conferences, and now teaches workshops herself. She warns that it's addicting, but is delighted to share this addiction with others. Learn to use this amazing, colorful, man-made clay (Fimo, Premo or Sculpey) to make wonderful "art pieces" for you, or to give as gifts ! Traditionally used to make jewelry and miniatures, the clay can be made into little sculptures, vessels, to cover small boxes, picture frames, and almost anything else you can imagine! The clay comes in many colors, (no glazes or paints to mess with), and can be mixed to create new colors. Intricate designs may be made and duplicated. It can be baked in a "toaster oven" to cure it ! During the week, we will make many projects, from beads and buttons to bugs and beach scenes! There may be a materials fee, depending on the amount of clay used. Other tools and equipment will be provided. Just bring your imagination!
