Summer 2016 Theme: Community
"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." -Helen Keller
At Ferry Beach we are working to build a world that works for all of us, not just some of us. Last year at a workshop on the Ferguson Syllabus, Marcia Chatelain reminded us to connect with one another not only in times of struggle and pain, but also in times of joy and connection.
Joanna Macy, the eco-philosopher created the “work that reconnects” as a way to awaken ourselves to the earth’s destruction. Unbeknownst to us, Ferry Beach’s summer themes began to focus us in similar ways to the work that reconnects. We started by affirming our Transformation, (from serious challenges to abundance) moving to Gratitude and Grace for what we have, practicing Compassion and now we are affirming Community. Next year, our theme will take us back to our Universalist roots: Love.
Macy’s work takes participants from Gratitude, to Compassion, to Seeing with New Eyes and Going Forth with Active Hope. This framework, once we learned about it, helped us see how our chosen summer themes are waking us to Active Hope.
By affirming a path of transformation, we realized the importance of being grateful for what we have — this beautiful land, 32 acres and 19 buildings and the incredible communities we build each week or weekend throughout the year.
This past summer we affirmed the importance of compassion — with ourselves, with each other, with others in the world. We honored the work that was done before us here at Ferry Beach.
With community and then with love, we will honor the present and begin to affirm the future, moving into the Active Hope stage by creating Ferry Beach-Keepers, our volunteer program. We will explore the ways we can see one another with new eyes, as well as see this beautiful place in new and re-newed ways. Join us!
We hope you will consider joining us at Ferry Beach this summer as we explore how we might use the concepts and ideas of compassion to impact our world.
