ChoralFest Conference Leaders
Jeffrey Lipton, Music Director
ChoralFest is pleased to welcome Jeffrey Lipton as our Music Director for ChoralFest 2018. Jeff is currently the Assistant Program Director-Curriculum & Instruction for Education Through Music located in New York City. ETM was founded to promote the integration of music into the curricula of disadvantaged schools in order to enhance students' academic performance and general development. Prior to joining ETM, he was the Chair of Music & Director of Choral Activities at Five Towns College in Dix Hills, NY for 18 years. Jeff is already working on selecting an eclectic repertoire of music to present to our attendees – songs that give voice to calls for justice and equality, African American spirituals, fun Broadway hit arrangements and other choices still to come. He and we are excited about bringing new and meaningful musical experiences to ChoralFest singers.
Dr. Drew Collins, Artistic Director
Drew Collins, who has been our workshop leader for the past three summers, is on sabbatical for the coming summer and hopes to return to us in 2019. As Artistic Director, he has provided a vision for the conference that we will continue to follow. Drew is currently on the choral faculties of Central Connecticut State University and is choir director at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Congregation in New London, Connecticut.
Tim Horne, Accompanist
Tim provides accompaniment for ChoralFest rehearsals, performances, and social events, and also plays for daily chapel services. He is the music director at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta, NY. He is also the accompanist for the Catskill Choral Society, Hartwick College Choir, and Oneonta High School. He graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA.
Michele Kelly, Musician of the Week
Michele Kelly wears many musical hats. During the school year, she teaches general music and directs three choruses at Millbury Street Elementary School in Grafton, MA. On the weekends, she can be found playing the piano or guitar, singing, and directing the Universal Singers at the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Franklin, MA. In addition, Michele is an accompanist/vocal coach for a variety of musical theater groups in MA and also a songwriter who has performed solo and in various musical group configurations over the years. We’re excited that she will be directing the chapel choir for the morning services under the pines in the Grove. She’ll also lead singing Ferry Beach songs after some of the dinners and will help organize the Thursday night Talent Show.
Suzanne Adams, Conference Coordinator
The Conference Coordinator for ChoralFest promotes the conference, coordinates with Ferry Beach staff leading up to and during the conference, provides information to singers considering attending ChoralFest, and facilitates their visit once they have signed up. Suzanne took on this vital position in 2013. Suzanne is a founding member of ChoralFest and has attended the conference every year since. She has decades of choral and solo singing experience with her church choir and local choral organizations. Now retired from the association management company she and her husband owned, she loves applying her writing, graphic design, and meeting planning experience to bringing people together to sing. And what better place to combine singing, Maine, and the beach than magical Ferry Beach that she has come to love in the last 25 years she has been coming for retreats and conferences.

A Message from our Music Director, Jeff Lipton
Dear Choral Fest Attendees,
I am writing to express my sincere thanks to Suzanne Adams and her team who have offered me the amazing opportunity to direct this summer’s ChoralFest at Ferry Beach. Over the next several weeks I will be reviewing literature from different genres and styles that I believe you will enjoy singing. Having almost a whole week together will allow us the ability to explore a wide range of choral selections and I am excited about making this musical journey with you.
For me music exists as art which is meant to be cultivated and molded into sound that excites the ear and brings the performer and audience together. Our daily rehearsals will be the place for us to explore the depth of each person’s music making. I know it is only February, but time goes quickly and before you know it, we will all be together sharing each other’s love of singing and choral music.
I look forward to getting to know each of you this summer. And if you have not come to ChoralFest before, I hope this will be the summer that you will join our conference. We can experience the magic of Ferry Beach for the first time together!
A Note from Our Artistic Director, Dr. Drew Collins
Ferry Beach is a magical place: the sunsets and moonrises, the beach, the pines, the people, the spirit… Making beautiful harmony only adds to the grandeur. At ChoralFest, we have an opportunity to dig deep into repertoire, exploring detail and meaning that hustled rehearsals during the year do not always allow for. You will leave Ferry Beach with improved skills, new ideas, a restored spirit, memories, and friendships to last a lifetime. There is nothing quite so restorative as breathing in ocean air, and breathing out a beautiful song. I hope you will join us!
