ChoralFest 2017 Workshops
Every day during our week at Ferry Beach is devoted to singing. Mornings start with the opportunity to join the pick-up chapel choir that includes singers from the GAYLA gay men’s conference, also in residence during Choral Fest week. We are looking at creating a mix of optional and mandatory rehearsals for performances that will include two hour morning sessions and some afternoon and evening reading sessions for fun and exploration. One evening we will join GAYLA with Tim Horne at the piano to sing our favorite Broadway hits. The week ends with the chance to shine as the group takes the stage to wow the crowd during Ferry Beach's Talent/No Talent show.
Drew Collins is a choral conductor, composer, and educator. He is Director of Choral Activities for Central Connecticut State University and choir director at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Congregation in New London, Connecticut. Dr. Collins holds degrees from Concordia College, Boston University, and University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). He has studied with several of the nation’s top choral pedagogues, was named a Fellow by Chorus America, and has masterclassed under four Grammy® nominees. He is in demand as a festival conductor, adjudicator, and clinician. He has conducted All State choirs, toured domestically and internationally, and headlined in Carnegie Hall.
As we discovered last summer, Drew has an uncanny ability to bring joy to learning and singing that is contagious. We learned so much about vocal technique, how to interpret music and how to blend as a chorus. We are all looking forward to being with him again this coming summer as we explore new musical genres and learn new choral pieces.
Tim Horne not only provides accompaniment for ChoralFest rehearsals and performances, he masterfully leads and plays for our Broadway hits sing-along and fills in where needed.
He is the music director at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta, NY. He is also the accompanist for the Catskill Choral Society, Hartwick College Choir, and Oneonta High School. He graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA
The Musician of the Week leads the pick-up choir at daily morning chapel services, leads after-dinner singing, and is available to assist in accompaniment and coaching for the weekly Talent/No Talent Show.
Ellie Rolnick feels that she was called to music ministry and choral leading while attending Choral Fest at Ferry Beach in 2007. A long-time member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Saco and Biddeford, she became their choir director in 2007. In 2008 she helped to create ‘The Harbour Singers’, a choir for end of life. Although she has no formal music training other than piano lessons as a teenager she continues ‘on the job training’. She received her Music Leadership Credentials through the Unitarian Universalist Association in 2014 and is also a fledgling songwriter. When not involved in singing, Ellie has been a chiropractor for over 35 years and has an active and thriving practice in Biddeford
Since taking on the conference coordinator position in 2013, Suzanne Adams has worked with the ChoralFest leadership to promote the conference and to provide information to singers as they consider coming to ChoralFest and once they have signed up. She also provides details about the conference to the Ferry Beach staff and coordinates with staff during the conference.
Suzanne has decades of choral and solo singing experience not only with her church choir but with local choral organizations. She was in the group that helped form ChoralFest and has attended every conference. Now retired from the association management company she and her husband owned, she loves putting her writing, graphic design and meeting planning experience to work bringing people together to sing. And what better place to combine singing, Maine and the beach than magical Ferry Beach that she has come to love in the last 25 years she has been coming for retreats and conferences.

A Note from Our Artistic and Music Director, Dr. Drew Collins
Ferry Beach is a magical place: the sunsets and moonrises, the beach and the sea, the pines, the people, the spirit… Making beautiful harmony only adds to the grandeur.
Our time at ChoralFest is carefully balanced between rehearsals, workshops, and free time. At ChoralFest, we have an opportunity to sink our teeth into repertoire, exploring detail and meaning that harried rehearsals during the year do not always allow for. The chapel service at the end of the week is led by the choir, and is unlike any worship experience you’ll find anywhere else. My goal is for you to leave Ferry Beach with improved skills, new ideas, a restored spirit, and memories and friendships to last a lifetime.
Ferry Beach is a special place filled with friends, love, music, joy, renewal, and growth.
There is nothing quite so restorative as breathing in ocean air, and breathing out a beautiful song. I hope you will join our song.
